FMGE Preparation Plan for First-Time Takers

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is the screening test that Indian students who studied MBBS abroad must clear to practise in India. It is a pass/fail exam — there is no rank — and a focused first attempt saves you from the cycle of repeated retries. Here is a realistic plan to clear FMGE on your first try.

What FMGE actually tests

FMGE is a 300-question exam, and you need 150 marks — 50% — to pass. There is no negative marking and no ranking, so every question is purely an opportunity. The aim is simple: cross the line comfortably across the standard MBBS subjects.

A realistic first-attempt plan

For most candidates, three to four focused months is enough if the time is used well. A workable structure:

  • Months 1–2: a first pass over high-yield content across all subjects, with MCQs alongside each subject.
  • Month 3: shift to revision-heavy study and start full-length practice tests.
  • Final weeks: rapid revision of high-yield areas and your weak subjects only.

Where to focus

Because FMGE is about crossing 50% rather than topping a rank list, prioritise the reliably scoring clinical and para-clinical subjects, and don't sink time into rare, low-yield detail. The subject priorities are broadly similar to NEET PG — see what to study and what to skip to triage sensibly.

FMGE is not designed to fail good doctors. Most first-timers who fall short do so because of no structure and no revision — not a lack of ability.

Why first-timers fail

  • Studying without a clear, time-bound plan.
  • Neglecting the heavy clinical subjects that carry the most questions.
  • Reading widely but never revising, so early topics are forgotten by exam day.

Revise and take mocks

Build spaced revision in from the start so nothing you cover early slips away — see how many times to revise. Tracking your progress across subjects and revisions in one place makes a tight timeline far easier to manage; that is exactly what a study planner is for. If you are juggling this alongside duties, our plan for studying during internship applies here too.

What are the passing marks for FMGE?

You need 150 out of 300 marks — 50% — to pass. There is no negative marking, so it is always worth attempting every question.

How many months does it take to prepare for FMGE?

For most first-time takers, three to four focused months of structured study with regular revision and mock tests is enough.

Is FMGE tougher than NEET PG?

They have different aims — FMGE is pass/fail while NEET PG is a ranking exam — so FMGE is about reliably crossing 50% rather than competing for a top rank.
